Who Is Wayne Harlem World Fletcher?

You can take the kid out of Harlem, but you… well you know the rest. Mr. Fletcher has come a long way from the tough and competitive streets of Harlem, New York to the halls of Central Dauphin school district in Pennsylvania. He has made his journey worthwhile, and his players are reaping the benefits of hard work and dedication. Let’s meet Wayne “Harlem World” Fletcher.

The Climb To The Top

Mr. Fletcher grew up in Harlem where just like Brooklyn, you either had a wicked jump shot or you were on the block. It was simply the times then, but coach Wayne didn’t allow his environment to tear him down. Instead he used basketball to build himself up. Mr. Fletcher played at Manhattan Center High School (Rams) where he led his team to the city championship game as a junior. He finished his career as a 2- time All Manhattan choice, a 2-time H.M. All City Selection, and a McDonald’s All- American nominee (H.M. All-American). Lets not forget to mention he played on the same team as “Cam’ron” of Dipset, and “MA$E” who are two of Harlem Worlds biggest rappers and well known artists. But Mr. Fletcher’s glory doesn’t stop there.

When he graduated from Manhattan Center in 1993, Coach Fletcher did a brief stint in prep school before being offered a scholarship to play at Clarion University of PA in 1994. He became a 3-year letter winner at Clarion, and was also voted team captain as a sophomore and a junior. After graduating from Clarion in 1998 with a BSBA in Management, coach Wayne decided to enroll (and graduate in 2000) in the Master of Science (Electronic Media) program at Kutztown University where he would play his senior season of eligibility as a graduate transfer.

There in true Wayne Fletcher form, he earned his 4th basketball letter and was voted the team captain. This would also be where coach Fletcher began his road to walking the sidelines. Coach Wayne’s career began his senior season. He helped to break down game film on the competition and provide scouting reports for his teammates. The next season coach Wayne assumed greater responsibilities as a graduate student assistant coach, before eventually leaving and working in corporate America.

It would be 10 years before he decided to delve back into his passion of basketball and coach again. He was back in his element when he and his family moved to the greater Harrisburg area in 2010. He spent years successfully coaching AAU basketball (Mid Penn Motion, South Central Select, Central PA Elite). He also coached youth rec and travel basketball as well as coaching the 8th grade team at Eagleview Middle School.

Humility

Coach Wayne came from humble beginnings and built his life one wind sprint at a time. His passion for sports and education have seen his path grow into a leader of young men. Coach Fletcher is currently a social studies teacher (U.S. History/Psychology) at Central Dauphin High School. This attests to his love for knowledge, understanding, and hard work. Coming out of some of the toughest streets in New York City, coach Wayne is a man on a mission. A mission that will see many youth benefit from his passion and love for people and basketball.

The Future Is Bright

The Future is certainly bright for this coach and his team of dedicated athletes. In a short time he’s managed to help his team and school reach new heights. Last year saw the Rams ending the season 22-7 (13-3 Commonwealth). They became 2020 Mid Penn Commonwealth Champs, Mid Penn Conference Champs, District 3 #5 seed (going into the tournament and coming out), PIAA State Qualifier. We feel this is just the beginning for him, and can’t wait to see what his team does this season. Even after losing a great player before the season started, coach Fletcher “can’t stop, and won’t stop” leading his team to victory. If you don’t believe us, listen to the words from the lion’s mouth himself, and let’s wish him good luck this season.
