Danil Medvedev: The Next Big Thing in Men’s Tennis

Education

Danil Medvedev was born in Moscow, Russia in 1996. He began playing tennis at six and quickly rose through junior ranks. He won the 2014 US Openboys’ singles title and 2015 French Open boys’ doubles title.

Medvedev attended Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Then he switched to the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth, and Tourism, where he received a coaching diploma. He also trained at the International Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain.

Professional

Subsequently, Medvedev turned pro in 2014. He has won 13 ATP titles, including the 2022 US Open. The ATP ranks him world No. 2 currently. Medvedev aims to continue rising in the rankings and building his reputation.

Records

Additionally, Medvedev is the first Russian man to win the US Open since Marat Safin in 2005. He also ended Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam streak by defeating him in the 2021 US Open final. In 2022, Medvedev lost to Nadal in the Australian Open final after being up two sets.

Presently, as defending US Open champion, Medvedev is a favorite to win again in 2023. He looks to add to his Slam count and cement his status among the world’s best players.
