Who Is Essence Carson?

She’s a 6 foot giant out of Patterson, New Jersey and Ms. Carson has done a lot to get to where she is today. Doubt is not something you should associate her with, and she will continue to show and prove. Let’s get to know this Hometown Athlete, Essence Carson.

The Climb To The Top

The essence of a person will always shine through, and Essence Carson shines brighter than people know about. She attended Rosa L. Parks School of Fine and Performing Arts, Carson took general education courses but also played piano, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and acoustic bass. She wasn’t lacking in talent to say the least, and while doing all that she somehow found a way to ball.

She would play just a mile down the road at Eastside High School where Ms. Carson would make her mark on the basketball court. In 2004 she made the WBCA High School All American team and was a starter. She was also named a McDonald’s All American where she would also start, scoring 7 and 5 points respectively for the teams. Although ball was in her blood, the court was far from her only physical realm of greatness. Essence was also a state champion in the 400 meter for track and field, while earning All-State honors in Volleyball. Imagine doing all of this before signing your letter of intent to play basketball at Rutgers University. Not a bad resume for most people’s careers, but Ms. Carson was far from done.

Upon entering college she would become an immediate impact player on a team that would make the NCAA Tournament three out of her four seasons. Her 2004-2005 freshman year saw her average 10 points and 8 rebounds a game on her way to her first Big East Championship, and  NCAA Tournament birth. She would also be named a  Big East Academic All-Star. She refused to settle there as her Sophomore season found her averaging 8 points, and 4 rebounds a game helping her team win another Big East Championship, another NCAA birth, and collect the Big East Defensive Player Of The Year.

And yup she didn’t slow down from there, she had more to prove and more awards to collect. Her Junior season was a big one where Ms. Carson averaged 12 points, and 7 rebounds helping her team and winning  Big East Defensive Player of the Year for the second time, she was named to the Big East All-Tournament Team, All-Big East First Team, and to the Kodak All-American Regional Team. Though they would finish second place this year, it was one for the record books as she helped her team make it to the NCAA finals losing to Tennessee for the National Championship.

Her final season Essence would make Big East Defensive Player Of The Year for the third season straight. This put her in a special class of athletes as only one of two players in history to ever achieve this feat. Essence would sign with the New York Liberty after her senior year where she would go on to achieve even more. Her first season found her helping the Liberty reach the playoffs averaging 11 point a game, and shortly after she was voted  to the WNBA All-Star team in 2011 scoring 13 points in the game for the Eastern Conference.

Her playing didn’t stop with the WNBA, she would play for teams in Europe and showcase why she’s considered a must have on any team. Her first stop was with Venezia, and from there she would play for multiple teams such as CJM Bourges Basketball in France, CM Cargo UNI Gyor in Hungary, Rivas Ecopolis of Spain, Istanbul Universitesi in Turkey, Samsun Canik Belediyesi again in Turkey, and won a championship with Yakin Dogu also in Turkey.

Like we said, Mr. Carson has done a lot, more than most people could dream of and there’s more but we couldn’t possibly name all her achievements. Click her “player profile” button to see more of her journey. Her achievements are just the surface of who she is, but they show so much of her character, and just another reason why Essence “Do It All” Carson is an incredible “Hometown Athlete” to remember.

Essence has a character bigger than her game, she’s stood against racial injustice while in college and continues to fight for the rights of women and minorities around the country, and the world. Her heart is as big as her game when she once partnered with Health Equity Initiative, a non-profit organization to launch an educational campaign to raise awareness of health disparities, as well as encourage community action and partnerships for health equity. These are the things  that make us very happy to showcase a talent like her.

The Future Is Bright

Ms. Carson has a bright future indeed, someone such herself doesn’t seem to slow down for anyone. Her past awards are just a testament to the kind of person she is when it comes to success. Essence has also written and produced hip hop tracks and full albums under the name Pr3pE (pronounced Preppy). Music has always been close to her heart and it comes as no surprise she would head in that direction.

She also interned at Capitol Music Group under the ARTium Records label, it was here she started working with streaming services such as Apple, Spotify and Tidal to deliver the elements they need, while she also managed relationships with video platforms for artists seeking to release music videos. Ms. Carson would once again prove her value as she was chosen for a full-time position as manager of the distribution company Priority Records. You can find her juggling her basketball commitments and her music business obligations around the world signing and developing artists while winning basketball games. Now tell me, who has done more than Essence “Do It All” Carson. Join us in wishing this “Hometown Athlete” good luck this year and go check out her music and her highlights.
