James Worthy: The playoff-proven MVP of Showtime Lakers

James Worthy was the dynamic small forward who completed the Showtime Los Angeles Lakers alongside Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. His clutch play earned the nickname “Big Game James.”

Early Life and High School

James Worthy was born in 1961 in Gastonia, North Carolina. At Ashbrook High School, he led the basketball team to the state championship in 1979 and was named a McDonald’s All-American. As a result, Worthy’s standout play earned him a scholarship to the University of North Carolina.

Dominating at North Carolina

Subsequently at UNC, Worthy made an instant impact. He starred on the Tar Heels’ 1982 NCAA Championship team as a sophomore, knocking down the game-winning jumper in the final.

Over three seasons, Worthy averaged 15.6 points and 6.3 rebounds, earning consensus All-American honors in 1982.  Additionally, his No. 52 jersey was later retired by North Carolina.

Showtime Lakers Career

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Worthy first overall in the 1982 NBA draft. His high-flying style immediately fit Showtime.

Although, teamed with Magic and Kareem, Worthy made seven All-Star teams over his 12 seasons. He won three championships with the Lakers in 1985, 1987, and 1988, earning 1988 Finals MVP honors.

Known as “Big Game James” for his clutch play, Worthy averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists for his Lakers tenure. His No. 42 jersey was retired by the franchise.

Post-NBA Life and Legacy

After retirement in 1994, Worthy had his jersey retired by the Lakers in 1995. James was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.

Worthy later worked as a studio analyst covering the NBA. Now 61 years old, Worthy is revered as an all-time Laker great who came through in the playoffs.

2023 Update on Worthy

James Worthy still works as an analyst and makes appearances for the Lakers organization today. Earlier in 2023, he coached the team in a Summer League game, showcasing his enduring knowledge and passion for the game.

This season, Worthy is covering LeBron James’ pursuit of the NBA all-time scoring record. While his playing days have passed, Big Game James remains a beloved figure in Lakers lore decades later.
