Early Life and High School

Marcus Semien was born on September 17, 1990, in San Francisco, California. At a young age, he developed a passion for baseball and quickly demonstrated his natural talent for the sport. In high school, Semien was a standout player at St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, California. His exceptional performance led him to captain his team to two state championships, earning him the well-deserved title of California High School Player of the Year in 2008.  Lastly, Marcus was also known for his basketball skills. he was an all league selection and leading scorer for his team.

Semien’s stellar high school record paved the way for a scholarship to play baseball at the University of California, Berkeley. For three seasons, he anchored the Golden Bears’ infield as their starting shortstop. His unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence resulted in his selection as a two-time All-Pac-12 honoree. Moreover, his exceptional defensive skills were recognized in 2011 when he was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Professional Career

Semien’s impressive college career caught the attention of Major League Baseball scouts, leading to his selection by the Chicago White Sox in the sixth round of the 2010 MLB Draft. In 2013, he made his MLB debut with the White Sox, where he spent the next three seasons. During his time in Chicago, Semien primarily served as a versatile utility player, showcasing his adaptability and ability to play multiple positions. However, in 2015, he solidified his position as the team’s starting shortstop, making 122 starts at the crucial infield position.

In 2015, Semien was traded to the Oakland Athletics, marking a turning point in his career. He seamlessly transitioned into the Athletics’ starting shortstop role, quickly establishing himself as one of the league’s top defensive shortstops. His defensive brilliance was recognized in 2017 when he was awarded the prestigious American League Gold Glove Award at shortstop.

Semien’s defensive prowess was complemented by his offensive growth. In 2019, he reached new heights, setting career-best records in home runs (33), RBIs (92), and runs scored (123). His exceptional performance earned him the well-deserved honor of being selected to the American League All-Star team for the first time in his career.
