Sylvia Fowles: A WNBA Legend

Sylvia Fowles is a WNBA legend. She is a four-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, a two-time WNBA MVP, and a four-time WNBA champion. Sylvia is also a member of the United States women’s national basketball team, and she won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

High School

Fowles was born in Miami, Florida in 1985. She attended Gulliver Preparatory School in Coral Gables, Florida. Sylvia was a four-year varsity letter winner in basketball. Additionally, she was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2004, and she was also selected as a McDonald’s All-American.

College

Fowles attended Louisiana State University (LSU).  She played college basketball for the LSU Lady Tigers.  Sylvia was a four-year starter, and she led the Lady Tigers to the NCAA Tournament all four years. Fowles was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Year in 2008. She was also named a consensus All-American.

Professional

The Chicago Sky drafted Fowles with the second overall pick in 2008. She played four seasons for Chicago, earning the 2008 WNBA All-Rookie Team nod. In 2012, Chicago traded Fowles to the Minnesota Lynx.

Additionally, Fowles has dominated the WNBA since joining the league. She is a two-time WNBA MVP (2017, 2021), four-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year (2011, 2013, 2016, 2021), and four-time champion (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019). Fowles also won Olympic gold with the U.S. national team in 2008.

Current Status 2023

After 15 seasons, the legendary Fowles retired in 2022. She played for Chicago and Minnesota, finishing as the WNBA’s all-time leader in rebounds (3,356) and double-doubles (193). Fowles also holds the league field goal percentage record.
