Angel Reese: The Rise of LSU’s Superstar Forward

Angel Reese has quickly become one of the biggest stars in women’s college basketball during her freshman season at LSU. The 6’3″ forward is a dominant force who is projected to be the #1 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft. Here is an in-depth look at her journey so far.

Angel Reese

High School Dominance

Reese hails from Baltimore, Maryland where she was a standout at St. Frances Academy. She was the consensus national high school player of the year in 2021 after averaging 23.8 points, 15.6 rebounds, 3.6 blocks, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists per game.

Reese finished her high school career with over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, joining an elite club of players like Breanna Stewart and Candace Parker. She helped lead St. Frances to three straight IAAM conference championships.

Reese was the #1 overall prospect in the 2021 class and chose LSU over schools like Maryland, South Carolina and UCLA among many others. She arrived in Baton Rouge with huge expectations.

Team Takeover Angel Reese

AAU Career

Reese also shined on the AAU circuit with the prestigious Team Takeover program. . She won two EYBL national championships and was named MVP of the prestigious Boo Williams Nike Invitational in 2021.  Some of Reese’s most memorable AAU performances came on the biggest stages against the top competition in the country. She dominated rival AAU stars like Azzi Fudd and Caitlin Clark during her career.

Maryland-LSU

Maryland University

On May 6, 2022, LSU announced that Reese would transfer to their program. She made the decision due to her trust in head coach Kim Mulkey and a desire to join a “winning culture”. Reese was also impressed by the school’s interest in the women’s team.

 Phenom at LSU

It did not take long for Reese to make her mark at LSU under head coach Kim Mulkey. Through 15 games she is averaging 23.9 points, 15.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 2.4 steals per game while shooting 63% from the field.

Reese’s rebounding numbers lead all of women’s college basketball. She has recorded an eye-popping 22 double-doubles, including 30 points and 19 rebounds against Tennessee.

LSU is 15-0 and ranked #1 in the country thanks in large part to Reese’s consistent dominance. She is the leading candidate for National Freshman of the Year and is in the running for National Player of the Year.

Awards and Achievements

In addition to her gaudy stats, Reese has already piled up several awards and milestones during her brief LSU career:

  • 4x SEC Freshman of the Week
  • NCAA record 7 consecutive double-doubles to start a career
  • Scored 25+ points in 6 straight games (LSU freshman record)
  • Set LSU freshman debut record with 25 points and 16 rebounds

Reese appears destined to be one of the all-time LSU greats. If she continues at her current trajectory, she will certainly be in contention for every major national player of the year award as both a freshman and throughout her college career.

NIL Opportunities

As one of the biggest stars in college basketball, Reese has major potential to capitalize on NIL endorsement opportunities. She signed with Excel Sports for NIL representation and already has deals with sneaker/apparel brand Puma and sporting goods retailer CSG.

Reese’s dominant play and infectious personality will make her a highly marketable athlete. She has the potential to be the face of women’s basketball and be involved in major branding campaigns. LSU’s #1 ranking and her status as the likely #1 WNBA draft pick will only expand Reese’s NIL opportunities and earning power.

At just 19 years old, Angel Reese is already one of the most dominant players in women’s college basketball. Her unprecedented freshman season at LSU is showcasing her talents on a national stage. Reese has everything needed to be the next superstar face of the sport as she continues her ascent to stardom. Below is Angel on her 21st birthday purchasing her Mercedes Benz.
